Cooooontenders, are you ready?! Celebrate Gladiators THIS Friday!

Well, kinda. Splatch, the wonderful company that ran the Y Mor circus show in August on Penarth Pier, and Platform Cluedo, are celebrating the 90s TV show Gladiators this Friday 11th November!

Fluidity Freerun Academy and Splatch care coming together to explode the idea of cabaret, with fierce challenges, audience games and contemporary circus.  The event is being run to raise money for the wonderful organisation Performers Without Borders, which teaches performing arts to vulnerable children in countries of high child poverty.

Here’s Esther from Splatch to tell us more…
We’re celebrating the nostalgic Gladiator TV show using the newly opened freerun academy as a platform to create a high adrenaline night with circus spills and thrills, extreme athletic challenges and classic games. Bring your comfy shoes ready to move around and dance your tootsies off after. It runs 8pm until late with a DJ and drinks.
And it’s all in aid of a charity that’s close to our hearts …..
Two Nofit State performers, Sam Goodburn and Esther Fuge will be sharing, teaching and creating the life changing experience and skills of circus with vulnerable and poverty stricken children in Nicaragua. They will be joining a team of 8 performers for a three month tour around schools and community groups to build confidence, develop empowerment and overcome social barriers.
Tickets are only £5. What a bargain! Get them here: http://splatch.brownpapertickets.com/
However there are £10 and £15 tickets available if you an afford a larger contribution to donate to the cause.
We recommend printing or sending a ticket to your mobile (at no extra cost) to be checked at the door.
Under 18’s must be accompanied by an adult.

Scratch This! call for Artists

Roll up, Roll up! Ladies and Gentlemen, Welcome to the greatest show on earth!

Scratch This! is a new and exciting Scratch Platform for artists, musicians and performers of all genres and skills. Our aim is to give opportunity for new and established artists to present and try out new pieces of work and be given opportunity to receive feedback from the audience in a safe and informal way.

Our first Scratch This night will be on Saturday 11th June 2016 at Cardiff Speaker Hire’s warehouse, just off Dumballs Road in Cardiff, a short walk from the city centre. The show will be presented as a walkabout/installation sideshow alley followed by a cabaret following the theme of SIDESHOW. The evening will finish with a bit of a party giving the artists a chance to meet the audience and obtain feedback.

We are looking for artists of all genres to apply to be part of our first Scratch This event. Whatever your skill – be it in performance art or otherwise we’d be delighted to hear from you. We are on the lookout for: Circus performers (ground based and aerial), artists and installation artists, musicians, comedy/spoken word, walkabout, burlesque, alternative acts and more!

Your act just needs to fit (somehow!) into our theme of Sideshow Alley and/or sideshow.

PLEASE NOTE – We do have the ability to rig aerial etc and will have experienced riggers to hand, however if your act is an aerial act or a dangerous act we ask that you provide your own apparatus/equipment and that you also send proof of your insurance.

It’s that time of year when Mary Bijou Cabaret get their baubles out for everyone! Yay!

This year’s performance, the usual mix of circus, comedy, sketches, music and lots of other kinds of ridiculousness, did not let us down.

The show began with a sultry rendition of Joni Mitchell’s River, followed closely by a playful Chinese pole act from Kate McWilliam. Trailing a bouncing silver balloon behind her, she flipped around the pole with a massive smile on her face!

Co-founder of the cabaret, George Orange, who we interviewed a couple of years ago, entertained the crowd between acts, drawing attention to the cock-ups in the customary Mary Bijou way. After finishing her own, special rendition of Silent Night, ‘Maxine’ (aka Paul Evans) got stuck suspended in mid air dressed as an angel. It took a good minute or so for the crowd to realise that it wasn’t part of the plan…

Other highlights included the bizarrely hilarious Austrian ski dance to a techno version of Vogue (I can’t explain it any better that that), George’s slackline, Kitsch n Synch‘s little sandman ditty, Catriona and Ben’s furious sketch about Christmas (“IT’S ONLY JUST BEGUN, ARGHHHHH!!”
), Maxine’s powerful static trapeze routine, Olga and Hannah’s silks act, where they transformed from toy dolls into real women to a Beastie Boys soundtrack and, of course, the finale – Eric’s unbelievable straps performance.

Mary Bijou shows have a warm, social vibe where everyone ends up dancing at the end of the night and acts are so close to the audience that you can feel their breath. The performers are a motley gang of incredible talent, and you always feel as if you’ve just dropped in on a house party where someone decided to hastily arrange a talent show, in the best possible way. Their shows are edgy, socially conscious, experimental and rib-achingly funny.

Oh, also a special shout out to Ernie Sparkles’ set design, which according to him included 4 tonnes of glitter….

If only they were doing more than two shows! Guess you’ll just have to wait until next year…We made a little video for you too – see below.

Mary Bijou’s Nut Cracking Christmas Cabaret – Review

We sent Darryl J Carrington along to Mary Bijou’s Cabaret to review it for us. Read on, and enjoy!

I was met at the door of the four elms by a grumpy looking reindeer and other curious looking characters. I was enticed in by the smell of mulled cider and friendly faces. What I found was a fantastic cabaret setting, with a lovely warm Christmas glow about it.

From the off, Mary Bijou did not disappoint, with the charismatic host George Orange opening the proceedings, welcoming us and making us laugh straight away with his quick wit.

What followed was a delightful mix of incredibly high skilled performers, presenting well thought out and witty acts. Each with their own take on Christmas happenings, like Anna’s Austrian hula hooping yodeler, who reminded me of that crazy uncle everyone has!

Laura Moys’ Christmas angel routine was very funny and showed off her incredible control on the Chinese pole.

Kitsch’n’Sync’s ice skating routine had me in absolute stitches, as they paraded a ridiculous dance around the stage!!

Paul Evans singing Santa baby, was also a massive highlight of the first act, having the audience screaming with joy.

Jani’s triple cloud swing was like no other act I’ve ever seen. Tying himself in impossible knots and releasing himself with death defying drops – a true craftsman.

Hannah’s singing ballerina was also beautifully executed, and showed what is possible when using the voice and aerial equipment at the same time, very mesmerising.

There was a great dance done by the Kitsch’n’Sync girls and Mark who made a lovely nutcracker ballerina.

As with all of Mary Bijou’s work, there was great use of physical theatre. Stories were being told in a very witty and amusing way.

I especially enjoyed, Anna and Tom’s ignored wife trapeze routine and Laura’s Virgin Mary on the back of a donkey smoking a fag gag.

During the performance some burglars got in and invaded the stage with a lovely dance/acro routine that surprised everyone! Where did they come from?

And some boxes danced and a pig and turkey emerged leading to the turkeys demise.

To top it all off George and Anna did a lovely ski workout, zat was full of laughs ya. That led into the wonderfully talented reindeer Adie Delaney, the big finale act that did not disappoint. With some really technical and impressive swinging trapeze sequences, she beautifully blended her character of a depressed reindeer that had us on the edges of our seats with excitement and laughter.

What a fabulous cabaret, one of the best I have seen. Was so lovely to see a Christmas cabaret that was not afraid to question the norms, but be incredibly amusing at the same time. I can’t wait to see the next outing by Mary Bijou.

For me; five stars!!!
