Cardiff Bay, the docks, the barrage, through a vintage lens…
Hi. Helia here. So hereâs the thing. Iâve got a Nikon D3100 DSLR, for which I am roundly (and loudly) mocked by all my pals who are into photography. I wouldnât consider myself an expert enough to even know the difference between this and any other DSLR, so Iâve never been bothered about upgrading.
Stuff upgrading. In fact Iâm downgrading … Iâve abandoned the original auto-focus lens that came with the camera in favour of this old Nikkor 28 lens that I found for pretty cheap on ebay (other ecommerce sites are available).
There is a plethora of information for DSLR photographers wanting to use old lenses on newer cameras … the only bummer is that there is nothing automated about this process (more advanced camera than mine will do some automated processes), but thatâs meant speedy learning about aperture sizes, shutter speeds, and ISO. So MATHS …
Anyway, despite all the difficulties, I am sold on this lens! Things look lovely through it. Hereâs a peak of Cardiff Bay on wintery days in November (there was no editing of these photos after Iâd taken – apart from straightening some of them up, because apparently I am living perpetually on the diagonal).
More of my vintage photography journey to come! And if youâre an avid photographer whoâd like to share some of your pictures with us, please get in touch – [email protected]
Til next time …
Peas!
Helia x

Your Cardiff photos on our Instagram: Doug Nichols
In January and February this year, Cardiff resident Doug Nichols has been providing some beautiful photos for our We Are Cardiff Instagram account.
Check out his pictures of Cardiff! Arenât they lovely?
When heâs not running, Doug Nicholls likes to take travel photos. Unfortunately he doesnât travel as much as heâd like to. So this month heâs turning his lens on Cardiff, where he lives and works, to capture his perspective of the city for We Are Cardiff.

Llandaff Cathedral – photos by Rob Khoo
A while ago, reader Rob Khoo got in touch with some lovely photos of the National Museum in Cardiff. Heâs been out with his camera again – this time, heâs been to Llandaff Cathedral. Here are his photos, and a little bit of info from Rob about his links to the place.
My parents have strong links with Llandaff Cathedral. My mum has been cross stitching since she was a little girl (part of her Dutch heritage), so she took on the task at one point of redoing all the kneelers with a little band of volunteers.
Thereâs hundreds of them… when one was finished the person responsible marked it with their initials. My dad got involved and did a few too (like you do). Dad died a few years ago… I was wandering around the Cathedral today taking pics and I found two kneelers that they made next to each other. Made me smile; there will be a bit of them both there for a good few years to come.

Speaking of Llandaff Cathedral, it features heavily in our Cardiff ghost-hunt radio program. Have you listened in yet?

Two more weeks in Cardiff – photography by Tom Beardshaw
Friend of the blog Tom Beardshaw has been manning our Instagram lens for the past two weeks – have a look at what heâs been up to throughout our city… and welcome new photographer for July!
Some more about Tom: heâs been a Cardiffian since 1996, when he arrived for a quick visit to a protest squat in Canton (anyone remember Yr Enfys?) and the van he was living in at the time broke down. Since being here, heâs work to strengthen childrenâs relationships with their fathers (he got Paternity Leave introduced into UK law in 2002 and founded www.dad.info) and more recently, he started the social media company NativeHQ, helping organisations like the National Assembly, National Theatre Wales and Arts Council Wales use social technologies effectively. Tomâs based in Roath with his teenage son, Cole, who lives with him for half the week and youâll find him on Twitter here â @tombeardshaw and on Instagram here â @t0m5k.
So that was all from Tom – and now Iâd like to welcome Alex Feeney to take control of our photographs for the next month! Hereâs a little intro from Alex…
Hello, Iâm Alex. I live in Canton/Llandaff, depending on how posh Iâm feeling, and Iâm taking over the We Are Cardiff Instagram for the next month.
Iâm a Cardiff migrant having moved here twice, despite not wanting to move here at all the first time round. Currently learning Welsh, badly.
By day I try to encourage people to get involved in the democratic process by having their say about the laws and policies which affect their everyday lives. By night I sleep.
Letâs be honest, thereâs been a lot of Roath around here of late, which is lovely. There are very many lovely things to like about Roath.
But the ‘Diff is a bit bigger than that, so Iâll be (trying) to show some other stuff from my travels around the City. Either that or, when I get lazy, Iâll be regramming from my own feed over @ajfeen.
I like sleep but I donât get any. Music, as long as it was released between 1982 and 1997. Sport, as long as I donât have to pay to watch it. And social media, as long as youâre not expecting me to be all social about it. Hate being social.
I also hate the overuse of exclamation marks! I mean, what is that about?!!!!
Look forward to showing you my Cardiff for the next few weeks.
Al x

100 days in Cardiff – the Coal Exchange
We Are Cardiff contributor Jeremy Rees is recording his days in and around Cardiff with 100 photographs of local points of interest. Weâll be publishing some of them here on We Are Cardiff – and make sure you tune in to Jeremy as he presents the Saturday Soulful Breakfast on Radio Cardiff!
The Coal Exchange
“Itâs really sad to see this iconic and important building boarded up and effectively mothballed after years of neglect caused parts of the facade to crumble and cause a health and safety hazard. It was once one of the most important trading halls anywhere in the world – the first million pound cheque was written here at the height of the coal boom. Itâs beautiful grand hall – the venue for many great gigs in recent years – now stands empty. According to the writing on the protective panels that have been erected around it in the last few weeks, it is now ‘seeking a new futureâ. It will need someone with access to quite a few million pound cheques before it can open its doors again…”
Thanks Jeremy! Catch you next time…
100 days in Cardiff – Wall Carving on the Pierhead Building
We Are Cardiff contributor Jeremy Rees is recording his days in and around Cardiff with 100 photographs of local points of interest. Weâll be publishing some of them here on We Are Cardiff – and make sure you tune in to Jeremy as he presents the Saturday Soulful Breakfast on Radio Cardiff!
Wall Carving on the Pierhead Building
“Todayâs picture is of a wall relief on one of Cardiffâs most recognisable buildings – The Pierhead. Once the control centre of the busiest docks in the world, it now stands as a memorial to the past and houses a permanent exhibition with lectures and conferences taking place in the Grand Hall that once bustled with international trade. Centrepiece of the relief is a steam engine to represent the constant flow of coal carrying trains into the docks from the valleys. The Bay today is pretty much unrecognisable from its industrial heyday, but the Pierhead Building remains, having seen it all.”
Thanks Jeremy! Catch you next time…
Four weeks in Cardiff – photography by Pearl Thomas
Big thanks to our girl Pearl Thomas for taking over the We Are Cardiff Instagram throughout the month of May this year. Hereâs a little bit about Pearl:
My name is Pearl Thomas and iâve lived in Cardiff my whole life. Iâm a 22 year old Photography student in Cardiff and Vale & iâve been accepted to study Documentary Photography in Newport University in September.
Since starting course it has opened my eyes to different areas of art and photography that I have pursued. It has given me the knowledge to match my enthusiasm to create photographs and art work that I never thought I could.
Although Photography is a huge part of my life, my second passion is human rights. Which coincides with my photography. I like to explore neighbourhoods and communities in order to shed light on the way people live. I believe everyone deserves to live on this planet and no other person is above anyone else. I believe we should all come together rather than pushing people away based on anything.
Apart from human rights and Photography, I enjoy music gigs and festivals as well as just relaxing with friends and family.
I hope you enjoy my photographs – take a look at my website:

Pearl got some great snaps from around the city. Do you know where any of the following were taken?
Hope you enjoyed this monthâs exploration on Instagram! For the month of June, weâve Tom Beardshaw (long-time friend of the blog) taking snaps for us around the city. Hereâs a little bit about Tom:

100 days in Cardiff – Ivor Novello
We Are Cardiff contributor Jeremy Rees is recording his days in and around Cardiff with 100 photographs of local points of interest. Weâll be publishing some of them here on We Are Cardiff – and make sure you tune in to Jeremy as he presents the Saturday Soulful Breakfast on Radio Cardiff!
Ivor Novello
“This bronze statue commemorates the songwriter and actor Ivor Novello who looks over to the Wales Millennium Centre. A couple of years ago a film maker worked with a group of young people in Riverside (where Novello grew up) on an animated film about his life and the impact of World War 1 on the area, using his songs as a soundtrack. For some reason I was asked to voice his character, and I even sang a few bars of ‘Keep The Home Fires Burningâ ….so far there have been no offers for me to reprise the role with a full orchestra.”
Thanks Jeremy! And make sure you all tune into Radio Cardiff, online or 98.7FM. Catch you next time…
